This year, we’re proud to honor Jaliyah Nelson and Alison Tynes, recipients of the Geotab Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Engineering Scholarship. This scholarship supports Black and/or Indigenous students pursuing programs in Engineering or other STEM fields. Jaliyah and Alison’s stories are a testament to what can be achieved when talent meets opportunity.
Jaliyah Nelson: Reimagining Urban Spaces
Jaliyah, an aspiring architect, envisions a world where architecture brings communities together, and her dream is to reshape urban landscapes. As a Black woman in a field where diverse voices are often missing, she understands the power of representation and is determined to make a lasting impact. Her journey hasn't been easy, despite facing a challenging recovery after a concussion from a car accident, Jaliyah maintained a 92% academic average and earned numerous awards. “I’m not just seeking a scholarship,” Jaliyah shared in her essay, “I’m seeking an investment in my education, my goals, and Black excellence and an opportunity to make a lasting impact through Architecture.”
Alison Tynes: Transforming the Future of Healthcare.
Alison Tynes is a future medical doctor from Nova Scotia and her dream is to improve healthcare for the African Nova Scotian community. She recognizes the systemic barriers that prevent equitable care and is committed to addressing them. “Doctors and other healthcare providers can play a critical role in helping marginalized groups receive better healthcare,” she explained in her essay. “By working together, healthcare providers can help to create a more equitable and just healthcare system for all.”
Supporting Diversity in STEM
Geotab is creating opportunities for students like Jaliyah and Alison to pursue STEM careers and build a more inclusive future through its scholarship program. “We are so impressed with this year's scholarship winners who embody the spirit of Geotab's program. I have no doubt they will drive positive change through their STEM careers in the years to come” said Klaus Boeckers, Geotab’s Chief People Officer.
By supporting these students, we hope to inspire more young people to pursue careers in STEM, knowing that they too have the potential to make a lasting impact.
