Matt Carter, a manager in Geotab's Solution Engineering department, lives a life that blends his technical expertise with his passion for music. By day, Matt is deeply involved in the world of data, helping customers and partners make better decisions and save valuable resources. By night, he’s on stage, playing guitar and singing with his bandmates.
“It’s always the same reaction when I tell people I’m in a band,” Matt shares, laughing. “There’s definitely some surprise as they try to picture a ‘tech guy’ stepping on stage at night, playing music to a singing crowd”. Music has always been an essential part of Matt’s life, teaching him resilience, confidence, and the power of connection, lessons he applies daily at Geotab.
Matt’s path to Geotab wasn’t typical. After earning a degree in civil engineering, he initially thought he’d found his career path. “But after a few years, I felt like something was missing,” he explains. “I wanted more innovation and room to grow.” Taking a leap of faith, Matt joined Geotab’s engineering support team, where he built a solid technical foundation and found the innovation and growth he had been searching for.
Since those early days, Matt has grown into his role as a manager, leading a team that supports the growth of Geotab’s FSP channel. His leadership philosophy is simple: help each team member find their unique strengths and place them in roles where they can thrive. “It's just like being in a band, where each person’s part comes together as something special” he says.
Balancing a fulfilling career with performing music isn’t always easy but “Geotab’s culture allows me the flexibility to pursue my passion for music, and that’s been one of the most amazing experiences,” Matt reflects.
In both music and his work at Geotab, human connection keeps Matt inspired. “Music has given me some of my closest friends and a creative outlet to connect and share experiences,” he says. “And Geotab? Well, it’s the people here that make it so special. They inspire me to be my best, and I hope I do the same for them.”
